Weekend getaways from San Francisco
Few cities have better weekends on their doorstep than San Francisco: world-famous wine country an hour north, a wild coast in both directions, Carmel and the Monterey Peninsula down Highway 1, and Lake Tahoe's mountains a few hours east.
We rank each by real door-to-door time and plan the whole trip, so the weekend is spent in the vines, on the coast or by the lake rather than crossing a bridge in traffic.

What's the best weekend getaway from San Francisco?
Napa & Sonoma for wine country (about 1–1.5 hours), the Mendocino coast for wild Pacific quiet, Carmel and Monterey down Highway 1, and Lake Tahoe for the mountains. We rank them by real travel time and plan around the bridges.
How far is wine country from San Francisco?
Napa and Sonoma are roughly an hour to 90 minutes north, traffic depending — one of the shortest great weekends anywhere. We time the drive so you arrive for lunch, not after dark.
Where can you go for a weekend in the mountains from SF?
Lake Tahoe is the classic — about 3.5–4 hours east for lake, mountains and (in winter) snow. We show the real door-to-door time and plan the stay.
