Canary Islands, Spain
Tenerife
Winter sun four hours away, with a volcano to climb and proper spa resorts.
UK · winter sun
"Winter sun" only works if the sun actually turns up. Half the Mediterranean shuts down and cools off from November; the places that stay genuinely warm are a shorter list than the brochures suggest — the Canaries and Madeira off the African coast, Cyprus and Malta in the eastern Med, and the sheltered south of Spain and Portugal.
We plan those escapes as one complete trip from the UK: the right airport and a sensible flight, a stay with the winter sun where you want it, and the good tables and walks nearby — so a grey British weekend becomes a warm one without the planning slog.

Canary Islands, Spain
Winter sun four hours away, with a volcano to climb and proper spa resorts.

Paphos & Limassol, Cyprus
Year-round warmth, thalasso spas and the Troodos mountains behind.

Malta
Honey-stone cities, clear water and a very easy three-hour flight.

Andalusia, Spain
Sun, sea and resort spas on the Andalusian coast.

Andalusia, Spain
Orange trees, Moorish baths and late, late dinners.

Sicily, Italy
A clifftop town between Etna and the sea, and the most glamorous hotels in the south.
The Canary Islands (Tenerife) and Madeira are the most reliable — subtropical, off the African coast, warm all winter and a four-hour flight. Cyprus and Malta hold mild winter warmth in the eastern Med, and southern Spain and Portugal (Marbella, the Algarve, Seville) stay gentle and sunny.
Both sit around 20–22°C by day through December to February — genuinely warm enough for the pool and long lunches outside, which is why they're the classic UK winter-sun escape. We plan the trip around the warmest, most sheltered spots.
Roughly four hours to the Canaries and Madeira, three to three and a half to Cyprus and Malta, and two and a half to southern Spain and Portugal. We pick the sensible airport and flight and show it in the plan.
