Weekend breaks from London, by how far you actually want to go

The best weekend breaks from London, sorted by real travel time — under 90 minutes, a two-to-three hour run, and a short flight — so the journey doesn't eat the weekend.

The thing that makes or breaks a weekend break from London isn't the destination — it's the door-to-door time. Two nights is short, and three hours each way can quietly eat a third of it. So the sensible way to choose is by how far you actually want to travel, then find the best thing within that reach. Here's the map.

Under 90 minutes: for a Friday-night arrival

These are the ones you can reach after work on Friday and still make dinner.

Bath — 90 minutes by fast train, and about as much as a city can offer in a weekend: Georgian streets, the only natural hot springs in Britain, and a serious food scene. The easiest great weekend from London.

Brighton and the South Downs — an hour on the train, sea air and a proper city on the coast, with the Downs behind it for a walk.

The Cotswolds — honey-stone villages, country-house spas and long lunches, close enough that the drive doesn't count against you.

Two to three hours: worth the slightly longer run

A bit further, and the reward is a real change of scene.

Kent and Rye — cobbled towns, vineyards and marsh light within easy reach, England at its most quietly handsome.

The New Forest — ponies, ancient woodland and forest spas, a genuine slowing-down under two hours out.

Cambridge — punts, colleges and a very good dinner, a city weekend that isn't London.

A short flight or fast train: the change-of-country weekend

Sometimes the point is to feel properly away. The Eurostar makes a handful of European cities a realistic two nights.

Paris — two and a bit hours city-centre to city-centre by train, no airport at either end. The original weekend abroad. Browse European city breaks for the full set, from Bruges to Amsterdam.

Let the travel time do the choosing

This is exactly how Retreat48 thinks about a trip: we measure the real door-to-door time — train, road, flight and transfers — from your actual starting point, not straight-line distance, and we build the weekend so the journey doesn't eat into Friday night. Frequently asked questions

Where can I go for a weekend from London without a long journey? Bath (90 minutes by train), Brighton (about an hour) and the Cotswolds are the closest genuinely-great options — near enough to arrive on Friday evening and still have dinner.

What's the best weekend break from London by train? Bath is the standout: a fast, direct 90-minute run into a city with hot springs, Georgian architecture and excellent food. Brighton and Cambridge are also quick and car-free.

How far should you travel for a two-night break? As a rule, keep it under about three hours each way — beyond that, the travelling starts to eat a meaningful share of a two-night weekend. Save the longer journeys for three nights or more.

Can you do a European city as a weekend from London? Yes — Paris is around two and a half hours city-centre to city-centre by Eurostar, with no airport at either end, which makes it one of the easiest weekends of all. Bruges and Amsterdam are also reachable by train.
