The best time to go skiing, month by month

When is the best time to go skiing? A month-by-month guide to the ski season — from early-season snow and Christmas to the January value window, half-term, and spring sun.

· 3 min read

The best time to go skiing depends on what you're optimising for — snow, sun, price or quiet — and those four rarely peak at once. The European season runs roughly from late November to late April, and each stretch of it has a distinctly different feel. Here's the honest month-by-month, so you can pick the trade-off that suits you.

When does the ski season start?

Most Alpine resorts open in late November or early December, but the reliable snow arrives later. Early December is a gamble on lower mountains and a safer bet high up. If you're going before Christmas, choose altitude: a snow-sure, high resort like Val d'Isère or Zermatt will be skiing well when lower resorts are still thin.

Month by month

December (early). Cold, quiet and cheap, but snow is not yet guaranteed lower down. Go high or wait.

Christmas and New Year. Festive and beautiful, with good snow on the higher mountains — but the busiest and most expensive fortnight of the season by a distance. Book far ahead or avoid.

January. The connoisseur's month. It's the coldest, so the snow is at its best and driest; it's also the quietest and cheapest window of the whole winter once New Year has passed. The trade-off is short, cold days and a higher chance of a weather day. If value and empty pistes matter most, this is your month.

February. Peak season. Reliable snow, longer days, and the mountains at their best — which is exactly why everyone's there. UK, European and US half-terms all fall around now, so expect crowds and top prices during those weeks and calmer conditions either side.

March. For many, the sweet spot. The snow base is deep after a full winter, the days are longer and warmer, and the punishing cold of January has gone. You ski in sunshine and lunch on a terrace. Snow can soften in the afternoons lower down, so it still pays to have some altitude.

April (spring skiing). Long, sunny days, slushy afternoons and a party atmosphere, at lower prices. Snow lower down gets patchy, so this is high-resort and glacier territory — the likes of Val d'Isère and Zermatt keep going when everywhere else is closing.

The best time for different skiers

  • Beginners — late January to March, when the snow is soft enough to fall on and the days are long enough to learn. Avoid the deep-cold, short days of December.
  • Value hunters — the January window after New Year, or the weeks either side of half-term.
  • Sun seekers — March into April, terrace weather with a proper base underneath.
  • Snow purists — January and February, high up, for the coldest and driest snow.

Snow-sure by design

If you can't move your dates, move your altitude. The single biggest thing you control is how high the resort sits, because height buys snow reliability. Retreat48 flags how snow-sure each resort is and the best months to go, based on its altitude — so you can match the ski resort to the week you've actually got. Tell us your dates and we'll assemble the whole trip — the right resort, the flights, the transfer up the mountain and the hire shops near your stay.

Frequently asked questions

When is the best month to go skiing? March is the best all-round month for most people — a deep snow base, longer, warmer days and fewer crowds than February. For the driest snow and lowest prices, late January is hard to beat; for guaranteed sun, April, high up.

When does the ski season start and end? The European season runs from late November to late April, though reliable snow lower down doesn't usually arrive until mid-December, and only the highest and glacier resorts ski into late April.

What's the cheapest time to go skiing? Early December (before the snow is guaranteed) and the January window just after New Year are the cheapest, along with the weeks either side of the February half-term peak.

What's the best time to go skiing for beginners? Late January through March, when the snow is soft and forgiving and the days are long enough for proper lessons. Skip early December's short, cold days.

Where can I ski late in the season? Stick to high-altitude and glacier resorts — places like Val d'Isère and Zermatt keep good snow into April when lower resorts have closed for the year.
